Swelling or a suspected dental abscess

Do not book swelling as just a cleaning

A swollen gum, cheek or jaw can have several causes, including dental infection. A bad taste, discharge, severe toothache, fever or feeling unwell can add concern. Contact a dental professional promptly and describe the symptoms so that the timing and type of assessment can be advised.

You do not need to diagnose an abscess before calling. Tell the office where the swelling is, when it started and whether it is increasing. Mention trouble opening the mouth, swallowing or breathing immediately. A routine appointment several weeks away may not match the problem.

Why the source matters

An infection can be connected to the inside of a tooth or to tissues around it. The clinician needs to investigate the source and extent. Examination and appropriate tests or imaging help distinguish possibilities. The visible bump alone does not establish which treatment is needed.

Depending on the findings, treatment may involve drainage, root canal treatment, extraction, periodontal treatment or another approach. Antibiotics may be appropriate in certain circumstances, particularly spreading or systemic infection, but they do not automatically replace treatment of the source.

What not to do while waiting

Do not squeeze or puncture a swelling. Do not put aspirin, strong alcohol or other irritating chemicals against the gum. Do not take leftover antibiotics or someone else’s prescription. Those actions can injure tissue, delay appropriate care or complicate treatment.

Ask a pharmacist or clinician about suitable temporary pain relief with your health conditions and medicines. Keep the mouth gently clean as advised, but avoid treating repeated rinsing as a cure. If a swelling drains and pain eases, the underlying problem still needs assessment.

Recognize dangerous change

Rapidly spreading facial or neck swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, eye involvement, confusion or severe deterioration needs emergency medical assessment. Call 911 for a medical emergency in Toronto. Fever or worsening swelling also needs prompt professional advice. This website cannot assess severity remotely or promise emergency appointments from a listed office.

Dental infection can sometimes spread beyond its original site. Serious complications are uncommon but important. The point of warning signs is to support an appropriate response, not to frighten every person with a tender gum into assuming the worst.

Where prevention fits

Good daily hygiene, appropriate professional cleaning and examinations help reduce avoidable oral disease. They are valuable before problems develop and as part of suitable ongoing care. Once there is a suspected abscess, however, prevention alone is not the treatment plan. The next useful step is assessment of the source, followed by an explanation of the care needed to resolve it.
